FC Barcelona scored their first victory of the season with an emphatic 6-1 win away at Estadio Municipal El Molinon.

This defeat leaves the home side firmly entrenched at the foot of the table, and at this early stage, look likely to go down.

Goals by Xavi and Samuel Eto gave the visitors a comfortable lead at the break. An own goal by Jorge Garcia Torre gave the visitors a comfortable cushion. However Sporting Gijon were given a lifeline when Francisco Jose Maldonado responded a minute later. After defender Gerard was dismissed with thirty three minutes remaining it became one-way traffic. Andres Iniesta scored the fourth in the seventieth minute while Lionel Messi scored a brace in the eighty fifth and eighty ninth minutes.
