This result will reverberate throughout Spain, if not the world. Newly promoted Numancia will have provided the biggest shock of the season in only the first week.

Despite being in control for most of the match they could not break down CD Numancia’s defence who were almost playing to an 8-1-1 formation at the end in a desperate attempt to hold on.

The Barcelona side, which were at full strength, looked as though this match was the last of a lengthy season and not the new one of a fresh season.

In only the twelfth minute CD Numancia scored the only goal of the match when a cross from the left by Carlos Bellvis fell to the totally unmarked Mario who had all the time in the world to shoot past goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

In a desperate effort to score at least an equalising goal FC Barcelona missed very good chances late on.
